What To Expect For Our Retreat

Have you ever been on a vacation that left you more exhausted than before you packed your bags?

Me too.

That’s why I designed an Italian vacation that allows you to truly relax.

No checking in and out of hotels every day.

No searching Google for where to have dinner and then struggling to decide what to order without the help of a local Italian.

No trying to figure out which winery to visit for a tasting.

At our retreats, we pick you up at the airport or train station and after that, the most complicated decision you will have to make is what drink to order for aperitivo.

Our Daily Schedule

Each day, we will share activities and excursions.  These activities are 100% optional.  If you’d rather stay at the villa and luxuriate by the pool with a book, you’re free to do so.

Mornings

Feel free to sleep in as late as you like – you’re on vacation!

Each day, starting at 8 am, a light Italian-style breakfast will be served at the villa, and will include:

• Fruit

• Yogurt

• Toast

• Italian Breakfast Pastries

• Espresso or Americano Coffee Options

• Fresh Fruit Juice

Italians often skip breakfast, or they simply have a caffe with a cornetto.  As we immerse ourselves in Italian culture, all our meals will be authentically Italian.

If you, however, cannot survive without a savory American-style breakfast, let us know, and we will gladly add a special egg and toast option for you.

Midday

After a slow morning, we will typically head out after 10 am in our Sprinter-style van.  Keeping with the Italian lifestyle, we will make regular stops for a “standing espresso” or macchiato at a coffee bar as we make our way to our daily excursion locations.

Although we will have a few lunches at the villa, most will be out at local trattorias, osterias or lunch bars.

What We Will Be Doing During The Day:

• Wine Tasting

• Olive Oil Tasting

• Visiting Botanical Gardens

• Shopping Vintage Shops

• Spending Time On The Tuscan Coastline

• Wandering Through Little Nearby Villages

• Regular Coffee & Gelato Stops

• Enjoying Lunch Out At Local Lunch Spots

• Visiting Historic Sites

• Learning To Cook Traditional Italian Dishes

• Shopping At Local Food Markets

• Returning To The Villa For A Nap & Refresh Before Aperitivo & Dinner

We won’t be spending so much time out each day that we get totally worn out.  Many Italians take daily naps, and we highly encourage you to indulge in a nap if you so choose.

Evening

One of my favorite Italian traditions is “aperitivo,” which is light bites and drinks before dinner.

Italians eat dinner after 8 pm, but we Americans are accustomed to eating earlier.   This makes the “aperitivo” tradition the perfect bridge to keep us from starving to death between lunch and a late dinner.

• Aperitivo will be enjoyed at our villa, or out at a local spot, every evening around 6 pm.

• We will have dinner each day around 8 pm – we will enjoy most of our dinners at the villa with authentic daily cooking demonstrations by our in-house Italian food, wine, and culture expert, Simonetta Mondillo.

• We will also be having some dinners out, including “endless pizza night”!

• After dinner, at the villa, we will play games, hang out, watch the stars, drink wine, watch an Italian movie, or crash “early”

Preparing For Your Trip

Here are a few tips as you prepare for our retreat in October:

• PASSPORT – make sure your passport will not expire within the year

• WEATHER – October in Tuscany is a mix of cool evenings and mornings, warm days, and the occasional rain shower. We can expect daytime highs in the 70s and evening lows in the 40s.

• WHAT TO PACK – Bring layers.  A mix of light jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts, and t-shirts is perfect for October.  *Italian men DO NOT wear open-toed shoes in public unless they’re on the beach or at home

THERE’S A WASHING MACHINE AT THE VILLA – No need to over-pack, unless you want to ; )

DIETARY RESTRICTIONS? – Let us know before you arrive so that we can prepare alternatives for you.  So far, the only dietary restrictions are “no beets” for one guest.  Let us know if you have something you’d like to add to the “allergies or avoid” list.

• BRING LOCAL CURRENCY – Although all meals and drinks are included in our retreat, you may want to bring a few hundred Euros in cash for shopping or tips.

You can order Euros from your local bank at a great exchange rate.  You can also bring an ATM card and take out cash at ATM machines all over Italy.

*Do not bring US Dollars, as you cannot use them in Europe

• FINAL PAYMENTS ARE DUE BY SEPTEMBER 1st – Email or text Nathan for a payment link

“Before moving to Italy, I visited the country for 20 years.   And it didn’t take me long to realize that there are two versions of Italy, the touristy version and “real Italy”.

Being able to share this hidden authentic version of Italy with a handful of wonderful people over the years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life”
