You may want to consider adding Italy to your travel plans in 2025 and the next few years.

With many economists predicting a surge in US GDP (gross domestic product) output based on reduced regulations and a more business-friendly administration, the dollar has already seen a near 10% boost against the Euro and British Sterling.

In plain English, a strong dollar and a weaker euro mean that it’s a fantastic time for Americans to travel, as well as buy property, in Italy and Europe, as your dollars will go a lot farther.

At the moment the euro to dollar exchange rate is back to where it was in December of 2002 when 1 US dollar was equal to 1.03 Euros.

Although the euro dropped briefly below this rate in 2022, it has been nearly 25 years since the buying power of the dollar has been this strong.

It is my humble opinion that the dollar will soon be stronger than the euro and it could stay that way for the foreseeable future – great news for American travelers and those looking to buy property in Italy.

A Great Time For Travelers And Property Buys Looking For A Deal - Favorable Foreign Exchange Rates For Americans

For the past 5 years, I have hosted the I’m Moving To Italy podcast and since the results of the 2024 US election, which left nearly half of the country unhappy with the results and many seeking a new place to call home.

I have seen a dramatic increase in Americans seeking to move to Italy, Spain, and other European nations.

Fortunately for these would-be expats, the latter half of the 2020s is shaping up to be the best time, in a long time, to make this move.

If you’re not planning a move to Italy, but you’ve always wanted to visit, 2025 and beyond is a wonderful time for you to check Italy off your travel bucket list.

Even my own parents are planning their first trip to Italy in the Spring of 2025.

Another Reason To Visit Italy - The Extraordinary Jubilee Year - This Is "An Every-25-Years Event" In The Catholic Church

If you happen to be a Catholic, 2025 is considered to be a very holy year to make a pilgrimage to Italy.

Every 25 years is a “jubilee year” where Rome opens its doors to millions of Catholic pilgrims who make their way to St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City to pay their respects to the birthplace of the Catholic Religion.

The first “Jubilee” (Jubileo in Italian) dates back to the year 1300 when Pope Boniface VIII started the tradition.

If you want to witness the opening of the holy door in St. Peter’s Basilica or have your pilgrim’s card punched by taking part in this historic religious and cultural event, the Official Rome Jubilee of 2025 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Recap: Why 2025, And The Late 2020s, May Be The Best Time To Visit Italy In Years

For centuries Italy has been a popular destination choice for travelers.  In the past 30 years, Italy has consistently ranked in the top 5 most popular countries to visit in the world, and for good reason.

Home to great artists such as Andrea Bocelli, Leonardo di Vinci, Michaelangelo, and Sophia Loren, Italy has been wooing travelers with its iconic sites, both natural and man-made, since the early days of modern civilization.

But I predict that the next few years, beginning in 2025 through at least 2030 will be a new “golden age” of travel to both Italy and most European countries.

With the growing strength of the US dollar against the Euro, travelers from the United States, as well as many other countries, will see their travel costs lowered significantly.

So if you’re considering your international plan for the next few years, I suggest that you include the historically popular choice of Italy and Europe in that plan.

Need Help With Planning Your Trip To Italy?   Let Us Share A Restful Beautiful Version Of Italy Our Way

If you’re dreaming of the perfect Italian vacation, but afraid of falling into the common tourist traps designed to take advantage of millions of annual visitors to Italy each year, I’d like to offer a humble suggestion.

After traveling to Italy for the past 24 years, marrying a native Italian, hosting the top podcast about life in Italy, and writing countless articles about Italy, I have made every mistake in the book.   I’ve tried to cram a years-worth of Italy into a couple of weeks on popular Italy tours.  I’ve made been endlessly humiliated by the complexity of the deceptively beautiful Italian language.   I have come to know a version of Italy that I would have dreamed of knowing if I hadn’t moved here years ago.

This unknown “secret Italy” is the version I would like to share with you.

I currently split my time between our farm in the hills of Rome in Central Italy surrounded by olive groves and grazing sheep and a home in a village the northern region of Veneto’s Prosecco valley.

During my years of searching for the perfect farm and researching all of Italy’s twenty regions, I discovered one hidden gem after another.  There are many cities and villages in unknown regions that have not become overcrowded and have not gone viral on social media.

Along with local Italians, we have created a very special collection of villas, castles, and palaces in some of Italy’s secret locations known only to locals.   We host non-touristy 8-day retreats in these spectacular locations across Italy several times per year.   We have pre-set dates for up to 5 couples as well as the option for private retreats for groups of friends and families of up to 40 individuals.

Additional Reading On Why Your Travel Plans Should Include Italy and Europe in the Late 2020s

As an American who moved to Italy several years ago and now hosts a podcast about living and traveling in this enchanting country, I’m thrilled to share why 2025 is an exceptional time to visit Italy and Europe. The favorable exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and the euro is creating an unprecedented opportunity for travelers from the United States and beyond. Whether you’re using credit cards, debit cards, or exchanging foreign currencies, the current rates are in your favor—a rare chance to make your dream European vacation more affordable and luxurious. Here’s how the performance of the USD and other currencies is shaping this golden era for travel.

The Favorable Exchange Rate: A Game Changer for U.S. Travelers

Thanks to strong financial markets and economic factors, the U.S. dollar is performing exceptionally well against the euro. The currency pair of the USD to EUR is at a high, making international money transfers and foreign exchange transactions more advantageous for Americans. A quick glance at your currency converter will show just how favorable the current USD rates are compared to past years.

When planning your trip, using a reliable currency calculator or foreign exchange rate information is crucial. Tools like those from Wise US Inc. or other smart tech platforms can provide the real rate—the interbank rate—which is free of the hidden markup often applied by high street banks and traditional providers. These platforms offer low-cost transfers and real-time exchange rate information to help you save money on international payments.

Why It’s Also a Great Time for Canadians, Mexicans, and Australians

The diminished strength of the euro isn’t just good news for Americans. Travelers from Canada, Mexico, and Australia can also take advantage of their stronger currencies against the euro. The Canadian dollar, Mexican peso, and Australian dollar are all benefiting from favorable market conditions, making this a fantastic time for international travelers to explore Europe.

For instance, whether you’re using international transfers or paying with credit cards abroad, the exchange rate minimizes extra costs and enhances your spending power. By understanding the mid-market rate and avoiding bad exchange rates through careful planning, travelers from these countries can enjoy huge savings on their European adventures.

Making the Most of Your Money

To ensure you get the best rates, consider these tips:

  1. Use Credit and Debit Cards Wisely: Opt for cards that don’t charge foreign transaction fees. Community bank ATMs and the Community Federal Savings Bank often have lower fees, giving you easy access to cash.

  2. Avoid Traditional Providers: High-street and main-street banks and traditional service providers often charge hidden markups and fees. Look for alternatives like low-cost online platforms for international money transfers.

  3. Understand Exchange Rate Terms: Familiarize yourself with terms like the bid-ask spread, spot rate, and cross rates to avoid surprises during foreign currency exchange transactions.

  4. Plan Ahead with the Right Tools: Use smart tech and apps that offer daily summaries, real-time updates, and exchange rate alerts to stay informed about market conditions.

Extra Savings and Luxury Experiences

With the extra savings from the strong USD and other currencies, travelers can splurge on unique experiences in Italy and Europe. Imagine upgrading to a luxury hotel, booking a private tour of Rome’s ancient sites, or indulging in culinary delights such as many different regional pastas and wine tastings. The favorable euro rate gives you the flexibility to enhance your trip without exceeding your budget.

Navigating Currency Exchange in Europe

While credit cards are widely accepted, you’ll still need euros for smaller transactions, especially in local markets and rural areas. Here are some practical tips:

  • Use ATMs Strategically: Withdraw cash in larger amounts to minimize fees. Community bank ATMs often provide better rates.

  • Check the Currency Code: Ensure you’re withdrawing euros (€) and not another unit of currency.

  • Monitor Current Rates: Use a currency trading platform or news app for the latest news on the euro rate and financial markets.

Why Market Risks Are Low

The current USD-to-euro exchange rate is influenced by stable market conditions and central banks’ policies. For travelers, this means reduced market risks and more predictable costs. However, it’s still wise to stay informed about financial instruments and market risks to make the most of your trip.

Financial Advice for International Travelers

If you’re planning a trip, consult financial advice tailored to international travelers. Understanding factors like interbank rates, high-risk transactions, and foreign currencies can make a significant difference in your budget. For example, international transfers through money service businesses often incur lower fees than those through traditional banks.

Expanding Your Horizons: Beyond Italy

While Italy is a top destination, the favorable exchange rate also makes other European countries more accessible. Whether it’s the historic landmarks of France, the cultural richness of Spain, or the natural beauty of Switzerland, the strong USD opens doors to a variety of unforgettable experiences. Even the British pound and Swiss francs are more affordable, allowing you to stretch your travel budget further.

Planning for the Future

The performance of the USD and other currencies against the euro isn’t just a short-term trend. Financial experts predict that the favorable exchange rates will continue into the next several years, making this the perfect time to plan multiple trips to Europe. Whether you’re exploring the romantic canals of Venice, the ancient ruins of Rome, or the vibrant markets of Madrid, now is the time to make your travel dreams a reality.

Privacy and Security

Finally, always be mindful of privacy policies and terms of service when using online platforms for currency exchange or international transfers. Choose providers with a strong support team and transparent practices to ensure a smooth and secure experience.

A Special Year of Spiritual Renewal

2025 is a Jubilee Year, also known as a Holy Year, designated by Pope Francis as a time of spiritual renewal and celebration. Pilgrims from around the globe will flock to holy sites such as Vatican City, St. Peter’s Basilica, St. John Lateran, and the Holy Door, which will be ceremonially opened for this unique event. For Catholics and spiritual travelers alike, this is an extraordinary opportunity to partake in a tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages.

Unparalleled Access to Historic and Cultural Landmarks

Italy’s rich history and timeless charm are always on display, but 2025 will feature special events and exhibitions. The ancient ruins of Rome, including the Roman Forum, the Eternal City’s historic sites, and major attractions such as the Vatican Museums, will be more vibrant than ever. Art lovers will find treasures in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery and Accademia Gallery, while the canals of Venice host magical reflections of their own Renaissance art and history.

Perfect Timing and Weather

If you’ve ever asked, “When is the best time to visit Italy?” the answer is “2025.” With warm temperatures, sunny weather, and fewer tourists during the shoulder season of early spring and late fall, it’s an ideal time to experience Italy without the summer crowds. Early September through early October offers cooler temperatures and pleasant weather, perfect for exploring both major cities and smaller towns.

Authentic Experiences in Iconic Locations

Italy’s popular destinations—from the romantic canals of Venice to the rolling hills of Tuscany—are always stunning, but 2025 offers a chance to dive deeper into authentic Italian experiences. The grape harvest season and wine festivals in regions like Tuscany and Piedmont provide a unique cultural experience for wine lovers. Culinary delights such as regional pastas and local cuisine take center stage in small group tours, where expert local guides can introduce you to the best Italy has to offer.

Exploring Coastal and Natural Beauty

The Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre, and Lake Como are just some of the perfect destinations for appreciating Italy’s natural beauty. Whether you’re drawn to the colorful villages of Cinque Terre, the olive groves and foothills of the Alps, or the serene waters of Lake Garda, 2025 promises outdoor activities and breathtaking scenery. Coastal areas will be less crowded in early September and October, providing a more intimate experience.

Unique Events and Festivals

2025 also boasts unique cultural events, from Milan Fashion Week to the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix. These events showcase Italy’s modern flair while complementing its rich historical and cultural heritage. Additionally, Venice Carnival, Christmas markets, and local festivals will enrich your travel experiences throughout the year.

Tailored Travel Styles for Every Visitor

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, there’s something for everyone. Italy tours in 2025 cater to different interests and travel styles, offering options like private drivers, small group tours, and tailor-made itineraries. Escorted tours provide comprehensive guides, while solo adventurers can rely on Italy’s efficient public transportation to explore major cities and smaller towns alike.

Practical Tips for Your 2025 Trip

Planning your trip well is essential for a memorable experience. Book Italy tours early to secure spots in small group tours, as demand will be high during this special year. Consider traveling in the shoulder season for fewer crowds and lower prices. Travel insurance is always a good idea, especially for such a significant trip. Opt for sustainable travel options to connect more meaningfully with local cultures and communities.

Buon Viaggio!

The current favorable exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and the euro is a golden opportunity for travelers. With careful planning and the right tools, you can enjoy the trip of a lifetime without breaking the bank. Whether you’re visiting Italy for its rich history, culinary delights, or timeless charm, or exploring other parts of Europe, 2025 and the following years offer an unparalleled chance to experience the best of what the continent has to offer.
