What Are The Airline Regulations For Carry On Travel Bags?

Carry-On Bag Rules:

Carry-on luggage falls into two categories: personal items and full-sized carry-on bags.

Personal items must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you.

While full-sized carry-on luggage must be able to fit into the overhead bins.

As a general rule, domestic US airlines require that full-sized carry-on bags must be no larger than 22″ tall by 14″ wide and 9″ deep.

These dimensions include the wheels and handles of a given piece of luggage.

International airlines’ rules are not the same as US domestic airlines.

Singapore Airlines has some of the most generous carry-on baggage-size rules at 45 inches and 17 lbs.

It’s a good idea to check the airline’s carry-on bag rules before traveling to avoid any issues with the size of your carry-on luggage.

The good news is that airlines do not count anything purchased at the airport, baby strollers, diaper bags, or mobility devices such as canes, crutches, or wheelchairs in this equation.

It is my personal preference to travel with two pieces of carry-on luggage and forgo the hassles of checked bags whenever possible.

General Rules Rules For Most Airline Bag Size Requirements:

  • Personal item: Maximum 17 inches by 10 inches by 9 inches

  • Carry-on baggage: Maximum 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches

What Is A TSA-Approved Lock?

Many travelers feel more comfortable locking their carry-on luggage.

While built-in luggage locks or independent luggage locks help to secure your baggage if you use the wrong type of lock, you can run into problems with airport security if you use the wrong luggage locks.

TSA-approved Combination Lock

TSA-approved luggage locks are uniquely designed locks that are equipped with the ability to be opened with a special security key by TSA agents in the event that a bag needs to be searched by airport security when the owner of the bag is not present.

What happens if you don't use a TSA-approved lock on your luggage?

Answer: Your Bag Or Lock May Be Damaged

If your bag does not have a TSA-approved lock when being searched and if you are not present when your bag is being searched, agents may forcibly remove the lock by whatever means necessary.

Usually, this means that the lock will be cut off with bolt cutters.

If a combination lock is used, the bag may be physically cut open with box cutter knives or any other means necessary.

The moral of the story is that if you don’t use the correct TSA lock you run the risk of having your lock or even your bag destroyed.
